Esther Bone Memorial Library Renovation
The 1992-built library gets a $990K renovation — flooring, bathrooms, a bigger programming room, and a fixed backyard program space. It closes January through May 2027, with a bookmobile and book locker keeping services alive for the 3,000+ monthly visitors.
Rain-related park washouts and irrigation savings
Heavy rain shut off irrigation (saving water and money) but caused washouts at Los Milagros, Mariposa, Willow Creek Bosque Path, and Northern Meadows. Repairs are being delayed until the rainy stretch passes.
Basketball and pickleball court improvements
Worn asphalt courts get concrete replacements at Havasu (with pickleball striping), Clayton Meadows and Enchanted Hills parks, plus a third concrete court and dog park at King Park.
Sports Complex North Phase III
Designs are nearly done for a new lit, turf little league field at Sports Complex North, with state funding filling the gap on top of park impact fees. Sierra Norte II's phase two adds eight pickleball courts, parking, and a lawn.
Parks staffing shortages
Parks & Facilities is down six positions, forcing crews to juggle weed control, irrigation repairs, and mowing. It's affecting maintenance pace across city parks.
Thompson Fence Line Trail dog waste receptacles
Residents say removed dog-waste receptacles and bag stations have left the popular trail littered with feces and trash, gathering roughly 130 signatures for restoration. Parks Director Peterson had met with residents in the field.
Pocket park standards under the Development Process Manual
Councilors List and Culbreath asked staff to revisit park rules in the DPM and subdivision code, saying the minimum standards let developers deliver token parks that don't match residents' quality-of-life expectations.
Fourth of July celebration and America 250 observance
The July 4 event at Campus Park features a parade, the New Mexico Philharmonic, the Rio Grande Symphonic Band, food trucks, and fireworks, with giveaways marking the nation's 250th anniversary. Parade registration is free but closes June 26.
Star Heights Park improvements completed
The 30-by-30-foot shade structure with benches and picnic tables is done at Star Heights Park, fully grant-funded with no city match. Playground equipment, surfacing, and possibly a water fountain replacement are next, paid for with 2024 GO bond funds.
Summer camps full at all five locations
Roughly 100 seasonal employees are being hired for aquatics and camps. Camps at the Hub, Cabezon, Haynes, Star Heights, and Sabana Grande run nine weeks starting June 1 and are already full — a win for working parents with no gap after school lets out.
Enchanted Hills Trail replacement in design
A 3.3-mile, 12-foot-wide trail through Enchanted Hills is being redesigned for resurfacing with a better base and asphalt. Design wraps up by October; construction would need a 50-50 city match on more than $1 million per phase.
